Volunteering in Detroit

The following volunteering opportunities will count as international/ethnically diverse work in association with WHSO. Remember, if you would like to go on a medical relief trip with us, we require that you complete at least 3 volunteering activities from the following options:

1. WHSO / Lessenger Middle School mentoring: This year, WHSO is going to continue a local outreach program started last year through Lessenger Middle School. Students can expect to help teach science classes and create assembly-like educational events for kids at Lessenger. There will be 12 slots available per week for students to participate. Please email Jenna Bruni or Alexis Drutchas if you would like specifics now (jbruni@med.wayne.edu, adrutcha@med.wayne.edu).

2. Freedom House - is a place in Detroit for refugees to stay while they are waiting for permission to legally stay in the United States. The residents here have gone through several hardships such as rape and abuse. WHSO volunteers will go to Freedom House bi-monthly. During the course of a visit, students will be reading blood pressures and also giving presentations on several medical topics such as female/male health, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and more. This opportunity will be a great way to volunteer internationally in our own city. Questions? Contact Jennifer Bruni at jbruni@med.wayne.edu

3. Ethnic Fair – During November WSUSOM holds its annual ethnic fair, and it’s one of the best events of the year. It is a great opportunity for students to showcase diversity through culturally-based food and dance. Contact Michelle Smith (msmith@med.wayne.edu)

4. APAMSA health screenings – Look for emails, or contact Carllin Man (cman@med.wayne.edu)

5. Amigos Medicos – Chass Clinic, Covenant Clinic, or Language sessions attendance count as learning more about the Hispanic communities you will be serving. Please see the student org board in the hall with the mailboxes for sign-up sheets.

6. Volunteer involvement with other ethnically diverse organizations, i.e. AAPI, NAAMA, APAMSA, etc.

7. Continuing previous work with other cultures, i.e. if you have been participating in something internationally-related or ethnically diverse outside of WayneSOM, then you may of course count this as volunteering. Please contact WHSO first to make sure!
