Fundraising
The experience of a medical relief trip can be life-changing, but it can also be expensive. The friendly folks at WHSO know that you are not made of cash and very likely owe the U.S. government a large sum of money. So, we're here to help you put the FUN in fundraising. Ready, break!
Here's what you need to know:
* Certain fundraisers are distributed to ALL trip-going WHSO members; for example, the sweat sale at the beginning of the year and donations received from first year teachers. However, to be eligible for a WHSO centered reimbursement, you must have raised a minimum of $150 by way of your individual fundraising from contributors (other than who you are dependent on financially, i.e. your parents).
* Every trip group is required to do at least one group fundraiser. We know you gunners are out there, so try for more. The more you do, the more you raise to split amongst the group members.
* Individual fundraising is consistently the most effective way to raise money and/or supplies. Download our standardized letter and supplies list and send it to friends, family, and any other connections you might have, particularly doctors, dentists, hospital admins, etc. Even WSU profs have been known to help out. What you raise personally, you will get back for yourself and yourself only.
*If a trip goer raises more money than the cost of the trip, then he or she will be able to choose one of three options with the amount that exceeds the trip cost: (1) leave it in the WHSO medicine acquisition fund (2) split it amongst tripgoers in their group who have raised a minimum of $150 but who have raised less than the cost of the total trip (3) make a donation to UNICEF.
Some ground rules:
* All trips must be paid for IN ADVANCE! Fundraising occurs throughout the school year and reimbursment checks come near the end. This is a necessary evil of having checks go through the school.
* To get GROUP money, you must be actively participating with your group in all efforts, including fundraising! This will be monitored by the trip leaders.
Past fundraisers have included:
* Professor cook off at Mongolian BBQ (they really are willing to do this, especially Dr. DiCarlo)
* T-shirt sales for various activites, e.g. ski trip, white water rafting, pub crawl
* Hosting a party at a local bar and charging cover - similar to post exam party
* Valentines compatibility survey or candygrams
* Shoveling snow over winter break in your neighborhood
* Selling merchandise bought at your trip destination, e.g. coffee from Costa Rica
Good luck! It IS possible to cover the entire cost of the trip!
