WHEN?
December 17th-December 24th 2009, 8 Days (2 travel, 4 clinic, 2 recreation)
WHO IS GOING?
Up to 20 Second Years, 2 Fourth Years (Amanda Duttlinger and Dane Miller), and 1 M.D.
HOW MUCH (estimated costs)?
$750 (Transportation, Lodging, Food, and Medications)+ $550 (airfare)= $1300 total minus group and individual fundraising
WHAT WILL WE DO?
Tentative Itinerary:
Dec 17: Depart DTW arrive in Managua, Bus ride (~3hrs) to Hotel or Rental Home in Port of Esterillo
Dec 18-21: Clinics in and around Las Canas
Dec 22-23: Fun Days, Activities TBD by trip goers
Evening of Dec 23: Bus to Managua, Spend Night in Managua
Dec 24: Return Home
This winter break the WHSO will be traveling to Nicaragua to provide four days of free clinics in an underserved area in the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The trip is through an organization called Missions of Grace based out of the capital city, Managua. We will be working with Cheri Mauldin who has been in charge of Missions of Grace in Nicaragua for the past 14 years. Missions of Grace works directly with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health, local clinics, as well as three major hospitals in the capital city.Clinics will be set in and around the rural town of Las Canas. Student will conduct patient interviews in Spanish or through interpreters and gain valuable clinical experience.
Las Canas is located in the Southwest of Nicaragua in the Departamento de Rivas. Natural beauty abounds on this narrow isthmus between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Nicaragua. Home to volcaones, rainforests, beaches, and the largest lake in Central America Rivas is sure to amaze, so bring your cameras. The rural communities near Las Canas are bursting with culture and will undoubtedly expose travelers to populations unlike any they have ever encountered. Come join the WHSO this December and practice your clinical skills, learn about a new culture, help people in need, and have the time of your life.
